25hours Hotel Copenhagen Paper Island reimagines Danish summer house nostalgia with a bold, colorful twist – creating an urban vibrancy and a hotel with a strong personality.

How interior design can redefine hospitality

January 2025

Stylt Trampoli is an award-winning hotel interior design agency in Gothenburg, known for creating unique and concept-driven design experiences that combine storytelling and aesthetics. Their approach to hotel design is about creating authentic and memorable environments that reflect the identity of the place and its owners.

25hours Hotels is an innovative hotel chain that focuses on playful design and locally inspired concepts to create unique and personalized guest experiences. They are a lifestyle-oriented and trendy player in the hotel market, with appeal to young, creative and design-conscious travelers.

Located on the iconic Paper Island in Copenhagen, surrounded by water and striking urban architecture, the new 25hours Hotel Copenhagen Paper Island stands as a vibrant and welcoming contrast to its historic harbor surroundings.

The hotel’s interiors were curated by the acclaimed design agency Stylt in collaboration with 25hours Hotels.

“Together with 25hours, our ambition was to create a fantastic new hotel that enhances hospitality and guest experiences at Copenhagen’s Paper Island, and to inject a fresh flavor into the city’s hotel scene,” says Erik Nissen Johansen, Creative Director & Founder at Stylt.

A vibrant urban district inspiring the design narrative
Once reserved for navy operations, industrial use, and harbor traffic, the Paper Island has today evolved into a lively urban district.

“The starting point was the unique location itself. It inspired a design narrative rooted in the timeless charm of a Danish summer house by the sea; a serene, nostalgic vision. In dynamic contrast to the urban surroundings, it resonates with Danish nature and a laid-back lifestyle, reflecting a colorful yet relaxed personality that infuses the district with a strong local flavor,” explains Erik.

“I didn’t expect that”
A cornerstone of the design process was translating the dream summer house narrative into every detail, including the corridor carpets, which were designed in close collaboration with the Dansk Wilton design team.

“Since this is a new building, upcycling and recycling are integral components of the hotel’s design ethos, from furniture to signage and artwork – and of course, carpets. Additionally, weaving in surprising ‘I didn’t expect that’-moments ensures the design is engaging and inspiring, while creating a strong sense of place,” says Erik.

Similar to making a movie
When choosing materials, furniture, carpet, art or props, Erik underscores the importance of ensuring that it all aligns with the narrative and fits the script.

“Everything must reflect the DNA of the personality we want to create. It’s like making a movie: A good script helps you find the right locations, the cast, what they should wear, how they act, and so on,” he explains.

A striking juxtaposition
A key part in the design process for 25hours Hotel Copenhagen Paper Island has been working with creating contrasts, tells Erik:

“Both the Paper Island and the hotel building are newly constructed, why we aimed for the hotel’s interiors to serve as a striking juxtaposition. The interiors aim to evoke a sense of retreat within the bustling urban landscape—spaces designed for personal hobbies, leisure, and informal gatherings that embrace creativity over convention.”

A hotel with a strong personality
When visiting 25hours Hotel Copenhagen Paper Island today, it becomes clear that this building isn’t just a place to stay.

“It’s a journey into the heart of Denmark’s coastal culture. And a proof that design, when guided by story, can redefine hospitality. Of course, there are a lot of specific elements that truly reflect the concept and create talk value, such as the ‘rag rugs’ in the corridors, the unique signage for each room, the art and props etc. But it’s the cohesive essence that sets it apart, creating a hotel with a strong personality, lovingly crafted with equal measures of charm and whimsy,” concludes Erik.
