About Byg med Kunst

Byg med Kunst works to integrate art into buildings and urban spaces. The company facilitates the entire process from A to Z between the developer, architect, and artist – providing guidance on the selection of the artist, placement, and type of artwork. The chosen art is curated specifically for each project to ensure it aligns with the building’s users, purpose, and architecture.

What impact does the art we encounter daily have on our social well-being, sense of belonging, and a building’s functionality?

The Danish consultancy Byg med Kunst knows everything about this. They specialise in incorporating art into the buildings and public spaces we interact with daily – from schools and institutions to hospitals and courthouses.

“Art helps give a place its story, creating identity, vibrancy, culture, and appeal – while offering new experiences for those using the buildings. It evokes curiosity, fascination, beauty, and new perspectives on the world,” explains Camille Marie Holm, partner at Byg med Kunst, which advises both public and private developers.

Enhancing well-being and social sustainability
In Denmark, public construction projects are required to allocate 1.5% of the total building cost to art. However, private developers are also increasingly recognising the value of incorporating art into their projects.

“Art is one of the factors that can be leveraged when aiming for a DGNB sustainability certification – simply because it enhances well-being and social sustainability. We provide expert guidance on selecting artists, determining placement, and choosing the type of artwork best suited for the specific building; ensuring that the art complements both its users and the architectural character,” explains Camille Marie Holm, who facilitates the entire process from concept to completion.

“We oversee the dialogue between the developer, architect, and artist – from the initial ideas to the final installation of the artworks and the inauguration of the building.”

Inspiring, stimulating, and inclusive environment
Byg med Kunst also works with existing buildings; helping schools, institutions, and hospitals integrate art into their spaces.

The mission is to bring art into everyday life, meeting people at eye level.

“Art in a building or urban space can be used to create an inspiring, stimulating, and inclusive environment. Our dream is to touch the everyday lives of many and to make a real difference for citizens,” Camille Marie Holm underlines.

Unique character with lasting impact
The integration of art into a building offers both aesthetic and functional benefits, she explains:

“Art can take the form of sculptures, paintings, or mobiles. But it can also have a functional character – such as lighting, carpets, and furniture – or it can adorn entire building elements like floors, facades, and glass panels. By integrating art, a building gains a unique character with lasting impact.”

Giant tapestry by Danish artist
Danish carpet manufacturer Dansk Wilton, known for its dedication to craftsmanship and artistic integration, is currently involved in a project curated by Byg med Kunst in collaboration with Danish artist Ditte Ejlerskov.

Together, they are developing a monumental tapestry for a new project by property developer SKANSKA, showcasing how art and architecture can enhance spaces both aesthetically and functionally.

“At Dansk Wilton, we have a strong tradition for working with artists – and truly believe in the positive impact of art. The tapestry being developed for the SKANSKA building is an example of how artistic collaboration can shape inspiring spaces. When art is thoughtfully integrated into architecture, it not only enhances aesthetics but also creates an environment that inspires and engages its users,” says Lone Ditmer, CEO of Dansk Wilton.
