Welcome to Mein Schiff 3 in the ‘Grööne Bar’

Imagine you are onboard Mein Schiff 3, enjoying the great atmosphere in “Grööne Bar”:

While you enjoy your drink with us, we would like to introduce you to one of our sustainable initiatives implemented at the Grööne Bar. Is the drinks display with the title ‘Cocktail Grööndezvous’ in front of you?

We have put together some information about the drinks display and the carpet that we chose for the Grööne Bar.

Focus on sustainable initiatives

The display made from recycled carpet waste

Waste is a major global challenge – we therefore try to reduce our resource consumption every day and thus counteract the global lack of resources. At the same time, society is becoming more aware of the need and value of a circular economy.

RE:SHAPE is a pilot project by Dansk Wilton with the focus on creating ways to transform and thus reuse carpet waste and to explore new resulting materials and products.

The drinks display with the title ‘Cocktail Grööndevouz’ was made in cooperation with the sign manufacturer Marahrens, whereby sustainability was also important for the base. This was created using a 3D printing process from recycled PETG, which consists of medical packaging waste.

Our drinks display is an example of the use of RE:SHAPE recycling material.

Nominated for The Innovation Award at CSI

We are excited to say that our collaboration on the drinks display was nominated for The Innovation Award at Cruise Ship Interiors Expo in Miami.

The nomination of our pilot project with the recycling of carpet waste as a resource provides renewed motivation to work further with this complex topic.

We believe that innovation and collaboration are the way to push more sustainable initiatives and solutions.

The carpet in the Grööne Bar – natural wool and Cradle to Cradle certified

As on other ships in our Mein Schiff fleet, we have once again opted for carpets made from undyed, natural wool from Dansk Wilton. Wool is a natural and rapidly renewable raw material. In addition, by using undyed wool, we avoid dyes and the dyeing process.

The carpets are also Cradle to Cradle certified. The principle of Cradle to Cradle is based on the principle of circular economy and the consideration of waste as a resource. So it describes the safe and potentially infinite circulation of materials and nutrients in cycles. The Cradle to Cradle certificate is an ambitious, international product standard that is economically and politically independent of state authorities and private interests.

In order to receive the certification, products and companies are evaluated for their ecological and social performance in five critical sustainability categories:

Material healthMaking carpets from materials that can be incorporated into new, repetitive production cycles. All substances contained in the product are recorded and evaluated in detail to see whether better alternatives can be found for people and the environment. Based on the ratings, optimization is initiated in cooperation with the supply chain.

Product circularityDesign carpets that are made from reusable components or leave an absolute minimum of waste. The long-term goal is 100% recovery and recycling of materials.

Clean air and climate protectionReducing our carbon footprint and making a 100% commitment to using only renewable energy.

Water and soil stewardshipWater from production is of drinking water quality; local water resources are protected. Influencing suppliers with regard to their handling of process water.

Social fairnessCompliance with recognized standards for social responsibility and fair working conditions in all parts of the supply chain. We show social responsibility and commitment in our region.

A product is assigned a performance level (Basic, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum) for each category. A product’s lowest category performance also represents its overall certification level. The standard encourages continuous improvement over time by requiring certification renewal every two years.

We hope that the materials and the stories behind them add an extra dimension to the Grööne Bar experience.
